Back around 1980, I played guitar and sang lead in a band called The Grubbies. Bob Dixon played bass, Mike Barone was on drums, and Steve Manzi on keyboards/guitar. We were a pop/punk band that played around New Haven, Ron’s Place mostly. We often were on bills with Baby Strange and The Excerpts. I don’t think we were ever cool enough or punk enough to catch on. We probably didn’t do the right drugs, nor hang at the right parties. That was never my scene. Sort of as with everything in my life, being one of the popular kids was not a priority.
We recorded two EPs. Seven songs in total. I will be sharing all of those here.
This is LANE ENDS, the last track of what was called OUR FIRST EP. It was probably my favorite song to play live. I was listed as the songwriter, myself and Steve as the producers. The entire EP was dedicated to actress Nastassja Kinski, whom at the age of 20 I had a massive crush on. There is a song on this EP is called NASTASSJA.
I don’t know how I feel about sharing this. A little embarrassed perhaps, and secure in the knowledge that I’m a better storyteller with words and images than I am with music.
Nonetheless…enjoy!
P.S. Please note, these digital files were transferred from the vinyl EP. Hardly the greatest sound quality of all time.
